A Weekend Guide to Walla Walla: Washington’s Wine Country

There’s something magical about Walla Walla. Maybe it’s the way the golden light spills over the rolling vineyards at sunset, or the way the town feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a storybook. Whatever it is, this little corner of Washington’s wine country has a way of wrapping you in its warmth and making you feel right at home.

I recently spent a few days exploring Walla Walla, and let me tell you—it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave. From the cozy accommodations to the incredible food and wine, every moment felt like a celebration of the “good life”. If you’re planning a trip (and you absolutely should), here’s my personal guide to making the most of your time in this enchanting town.

Where to Stay in Walla Walla: Cozy Retreats and Historic Charm

1. Stay at The Wesley (LGBTQ+ Owned) 🏳️‍🌈

Tucked away just a single block from the vibrant downtown area, The Wesley is truly a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. It offers a quiet and serene atmosphere, providing a peaceful retreat, yet remains conveniently within walking distance of all the best restaurants and tasting rooms that the area has to offer. The self-catered suites are particularly ideal if you are looking for a little extra space to spread out and relax during your stay. The Wesley feels like a retreat within a retreat—a place where you can relax and recharge after a day of exploring. The private courtyard is a lovely spot to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, and the proximity to downtown makes it incredibly convenient.

2. The GG

Imagine stepping into a beautifully restored 1909 home, where every detail feels like it was crafted just for you. That’s The GG. This place is a love letter to high style and comfortable living. It’s the kind of spot where you can sip coffee on the porch in the morning and feel like you’ve been transported to a simpler, more elegant time.

3. The FINCH

If modern minimalism is more your personal vibe, then The FINCH is definitely the spot for you. This establishment is conveniently located right in the heart of downtown, where it exudes an open-air concept that feels both refreshingly modern and invitingly cozy. I particularly loved the thoughtful mix of leather, metal, and wood accents—each piece sourced from talented local craftsmen, which adds a unique touch. Overall, it serves as the perfect basecamp for exploring all that the town has to offer.

4. The Marcus Whitman

You definitely can’t miss the Marcus Whitman—it’s the truly iconic hotel that proudly towers over the heart of downtown Walla Walla. Staying at this remarkable establishment feels like stepping into a captivating piece of history, all while enjoying all the modern luxuries and comforts you could possibly desire. The Marcus Whitman is deeply rooted in the spirit of Walla Walla. The rooms are spacious and elegantly appointed, and the service is impeccable. It’s no wonder this hotel has been a beloved landmark since 1928.

5. Hotel Hardware

If you’re venturing out to Dayton, don’t miss Hotel Hardware. The coffee bar on the main floor serves up Indaba Coffee, and it’s the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of skiing at Bluewood. The modern design made me feel right at home. The rooms are huge and super well-lit. If staying at Hotel Hardware or just stopping for a coffee or drink, don’t forget to check out the gift-shop for some great merch and souvenirs!

6. Royal Block Hotel

Newer to the scene, the Royal Block Hotel is a blend of western charm and Nordic simplicity. I loved the cozy bar, where you can sip Walla Walla Valley wines while listening to live music. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger. Filled with incredible pieces of art, and modern architectural design, the space is super inspiring. The bar in the lobby serves great Walla Walla wines and is the perfect spot to hangout in the evening.

Where to Eat in Walla Walla: A Foodie’s Paradise

1. Lunch or Dinner at TMACS (LGBTQ+ Owned) 🏳️‍🌈

Lunch at TMACS was a highlight of my trip. Chef Tom Maccarone’s farm-to-table creations are a love letter to the Walla Walla Valley. The menu changes with the seasons, showcasing the freshest local ingredients in dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious. The craft bar is a showstopper—not only the design of the bar, but the offerings that it presents: think smoke-infused cocktails and rare ingredients that make every sip an adventure. Try a variety of dishes as you can’t really go wrong. This place will change your definition of a salad in the best way possible.

2. Italian Flavors at Passatempo Taverna

If you’re craving Italian, head to Passatempo Taverna. The handmade pasta is divine, and the historical cocktails add a fun twist. It’s the kind of meal that makes you want to slow down and savor every bite. The pesto-gnocchi is cooked to perfection, but for me the bolognese truly stole the show. Paired with a wide selection of craft-cocktails, Passatempo Taverna is a restaurant you can’t miss for a visit to Walla Walla.

3. The Perfect Brunch at Bacon & Eggs (LGBTQ+ Owned) 🏳️‍🌈

Breakfast at Bacon & Eggs is a must. Run by the Michelles (yes, both owners are named Michelle), this spot is all about scratch-made dishes and locally sourced ingredients. I will never forget the fluffy pancakes and biscuits available there. A clear favorite dish at this Walla Walla breakfast staple is the Migas - fried tortilla strips scrambled with eggs, peppers, onions, and love. The Michelles are passionate about food, and it shows in every dish. The farm-to-table movement is evident on the menu, with just about anything that can be locally grown and family-farmed.

4. Grab-And-Go Meals at The Mill

For a quick bite, The Mill is my go-to. Their grab-and-go sandwiches and salads are perfect for a picnic in the park or a quick refuel between wine tastings. The Mill is a great option for travelers who want something delicious and convenient without sacrificing quality.

5. Breakfast at Clarette’s Restaurant

Clarette’s is a local institution, and for good reason. The menu has something for everyone, from hearty breakfasts to seafood platters. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel like a regular. A classic diner setting serving incredible dishes. The pancakes are unreal, and so are the portions! You’ll be very happy trying a little something savory and a little something sweet, along with plenty of coffee.

6. Pastries and Coffee at Colville Street Patisserie

No trip to Walla Walla is complete without a stop at Colville Street Patisserie. Their buttery pastries and gelato are worth every calorie. Trust me, you’ll want to try one of everything. Colville Street Patisserie opens promptly at 9am, and gets quite busy on the weekends. The lattes are fantastic, and definitely try one of their cinnamon rolls! The patisserie has a charming, European feel, with a display case full of beautiful desserts and a cozy seating area where you can enjoy your treats.

7. The Best Pizza in Town at American 35 Pizzeria

Taking a pizza-making class at American 35 was so much fun. Learning to toss dough and make Neapolitan-style pizzas was a delicious way to spend an afternoon. It’s not only a great learning experience, but a filling one at that! American 35 Pizzeria prides itself on fire-roasted flaky crusts baked to perfection. They specialize in a variety of unique and incredible specialty-style pizzas, but what’s incredible is that you can also create something special on your own!

What to See and Do in Walla Walla: Wine, Art, and Adventure

1. Explore Wine Country with True North Wine Tours (LGBTQ+ Owned) 🏳️‍🌈

True North makes wine tasting effortless and an experience to remember. Their passion for the region shines through, and they’ll take you to some of the best wineries in the area. I appreciated how knowledgeable and friendly the guides were, and the small group size made the experience feel personal and intimate. It’s a must for wine lovers.

Make sure to try August Forest 🏳️‍🌈 and TruthTeller Wineries. 🏳️‍🌈 These LGBTQ+ owned wineries are a true highlight. Their stories and wines are equally inspiring.

2. Wine Tasting at Rotie Cellars

A quick stop at Rotie Cellars in Milton-Freewater was worth it just for their Stonewall Rosé. Rotie Cellars donates proceeds from the Stonewall Rosé to UTOPIA, a queer and trans people of color-led, grassroots organization, providing many resources to support the LGBTQ+ community. The Rocks District is a unique AVA, and Rotie’s wines are a perfect reflection of the territory. Through the variety of wines they offer, you can taste the different levels of minerality from which the grapes grew. The tasting room is cozy and inviting, with sweeping views of the vineyard surrounding.

3. Wine Tasting at Caprio Cellars

The views at Caprio Cellars are breathtaking. Sitting on their terrace, sipping wine, and taking in the 360-degree views of the valley—it doesn’t get much better than that. The tasting room is elegant and welcoming, with a focus on estate-grown wines that showcase the best of the Walla Walla Valley. A nice perk, you can also enjoy a pretty incredible food-tasting menu paired with a wine tasting. Sitting by the fire inside or lounging on the patio admiring the view, it’s a fantastic place to spend an afternoon.

4. Admire the Sculptures at Whitman College Campus

Take a stroll through the Whitman College campus, where nearly 30 outdoor sculptures are on display. The self-guided tour is a peaceful way to soak in some art and fresh air, and I loved the variety of pieces—from abstract works to more traditional sculptures. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the creative spirit of Walla Walla.

5. Take a Snowmobile Tour at Bluewood

For adventure seekers, the Bluewood Snowmobile Tour is a blast. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the scenery is absolutely stunning. Just make sure to bundle up—it gets chilly out there! The tour takes you through snowy forests and open meadows, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the views. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the beauty of the region.

6. Dayton and Milton-Freewater: Hidden Gems

  • Tour Sweet Bee Honey Co

A visit to Sweet Bee Honey is a sweet treat. The fifth-generation family behind this business is passionate about sustainable beekeeping, and their artisan honey is some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The tasting room is charming and informative, with a focus on the health of the hive and the importance of bees to the ecosystem. I left with a few jars of honey and a newfound appreciation for the art of beekeeping.

  • Walla Walla Cheese Co

Cheese lovers, rejoice! Walla Walla Cheese Co is a little slice of cheesey heaven. The Adams family brings decades of experience to their craft, and their artisanal cheeses are a testament to their passion and skill. I loved sampling a variety of styles, especially the variety of freshly made cheddar. If you’re looking for something sweet, there are also plenty of ice cream flavors to choose from!

Walla Walla is one of those places that feels like it was made for slowing down and savoring life. Whether you’re sipping wine at a vineyard, exploring historic landmarks, or simply enjoying a leisurely meal, this town has a way of making every moment feel special. It’s a place that invites you to connect—with the land, the people, and yourself. And honestly, isn’t that what travel is all about?

So pack your bags, grab a good book for the road, and get ready to fall in love with Walla Walla. Trust me, you’ll be planning your next trip before you even leave.
