Copenhagen Downtown Hostel Review | Backpacking Europe
Copenhagen Downtown Hostel
Where to Stay in Copenhagen
Why Stay at Copenhagen Downtown Hostel?
One of the most difficult things to figure out when planning a big trip is deciding where to stay. To simplify that choice, here’s a candid review of hostel experiences from our stay. This was especially true for my friends and me when we started searching for our accommodations on our European backpacking trip.
Looking into Copenhagen, we were overwhelmed with the number of options. That search led straight to Downtown Hostel Copenhagen, which ticked all our budget and location boxes. Then, like an answer from the travel-gods, we took our search to HostelWorld and found this glorious gem.
Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is one of a kind, original hostel goodness. It genuinely competes with the best hostels in Copenhagen, Denmark, for vibe, value, and cleanliness. The upbeat environment is inundated with interesting and energetic like-minded travelers. Cleanliness & sanitation have always been concerns to my friends and me when staying at hostels. Still, we were pleasantly surprised to find that not only does Copenhagen Downtown Hostel maintain its grungy & edgy charm, but the rooms were incredibly clean!
Prime Location
I cannot stress enough how important location is when booking your accommodations for your backpacking trip. Picking a well-placed Copenhagen city hostel saves time, transit costs, and your legs. Carrying heavy bags over cobblestone roads for miles may be to some an enjoyable experience; however, the majority of the general public appreciates not destroying their legs within the first hour of arriving at their destination.
Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is conveniently located just 10 to 15 minutes walk away from Copenhagen's Central Station. This kind of central access defines a great downtown hostel in Copenhagen for quick city breaks. That is on the other side of Tivoli Gardens! Not only are you within a short distance of the station, but you could even walk through this historic and stunning amusement park on the way to checking into your accommodations!
The other great benefit, of course, is Copenhagen Downtown Hostel's proximity to many of central Copenhagen's great attractions. If you prefer extra privacy, ask about private room hostel Copenhagen options before you book. Just like the name suggests, this hostel is right in the middle of 'Copenhagen's Downtown'. Walk to Nyhavn within 20 minutes, Strøget within 5 minutes, and countless bars & restaurants right out the front door.
Incredibly Friendly Atmosphere
If you're like me and want to make a friend or two on your journey, finding a hostel that fosters a friendly atmosphere and encourages travelers to meet one another is of utmost importance! That social buzz is why many backpackers love a lively youth hostel in Copenhagen's downtown scene. This is why Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is definitely on my list of favorites!
Copenhagen Downtown Hostel features in its lobby an expansive room full of long tables, bean-bag sacks, and lounge furniture, providing plenty of space to take a seat and relax after a long day's travel. Spaces like this are rare even for a busy hostel in Copenhagen during peak season. You'll find the room buzzing with fellow travelers gathered around tables with a couple of beers, snacking while playing cards, or simply taking advantage of the free wifi and coffee.

You cannot beat a hostel that makes it easy to make new friends. Among Copenhagen, Denmark hostels, this nightly community dinner is a standout value. One of my favorite things about Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is its optional group meal available every evening for an extremely cheap and affordable price compared to Copenhagen's usual steep meal prices!
Gathering around a family-style table and sharing a meal (and a few drinks!) is the perfect way to start your adventure in this incredible city. It’s one reason travelers rate it highly among hostels in Copenhagen, Denmark, for easy meetups. Plus, it gives you the chance to get a group of travelers together to go out later!
My group immediately clicked with those we sat with at our first meal there. Exploring downtown Copenhagen, Denmark, together turned quick introductions into lasting friendships. We became instant friends and basically spent our entire trip hanging out with them, and afterwards, even got invited to visit them in Cologne. So again, a hostel that makes it easy to meet new friends is one of the most important things in the world!!!

Free Walking Tours!
This blog wouldn't be complete without mentioning that one of our favorite experiences while visiting Copenhagen was brought to us by the very hostel we chose to stay in! We even heard about them from staff and guests across Copenhagen city hostel circles before we went. Copenhagen's Free Walking Tours are available to anyone who happens to come to the City Hall on any day at 11 AM. Still, we first learned about this fascinating and FREE tour through their many recommendations at Copenhagen Downtown Hostel. I was skeptical about showing up for this free tour, but I had never been so pleasantly surprised in my life. It was one of the funniest and most educational tours I have ever experienced. Expenses can add up extremely quickly when staying in Copenhagen. The prices are quite a bit higher compared to American counterparts and other areas in Europe, but the experience of seeing one of Scandinavia’s most historic and lively cities is indescribable, especially if you compare typical hotels with Copenhagen, Denmark, hostels.
In their own words, here's how Copenhagen Downtown Hostel describes itself on HostelWorld:
“Copenhagen Downtown hostel few years in a row (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and in 2017.) won the ‘Most Popular Hostel in Copenhagen’ award at the Hoscars, chosen and given out by HostelWorld, and all thanks to our lovely guests who rated our hostel. Come and see it yourself!”
“Our award-winning hostel has 24-hour reception, a spacious and lively lounge and bar, an edgy venue for live music, laundry facilities, free wifi, free iPad and laptop rental, and a welcoming area outside, overlooking the street, all the things you’d hope for in a Copenhagen city hostel.
We are centrally located in the old part of Copenhagen, next to the City Hall Square and the Parliament. Our location is outstanding for local hotspots, whether it’s bustling nightlife, the longest pedestrianized shopping street in the world (Strøget), fusion restaurants, the famous Tivoli Gardens, or the harbor beach. If you’d like some more culture, we are just next to Denmark’s best museums, galleries, and theaters, the kind of access people expect from hostels in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Our location means we have all public transport links on our doorstep; you are within easy reach of everything that the city and the rest of Denmark has to offer, which is why many travelers prefer accommodation at a downtown Copenhagen hostel.
The hostel is cosy yet cool, proudly showing a Scandinavian retro design and a friendly, relaxed vibe. Our trendy lounge provides the ideal surroundings to chill or socialize and meet other guests. Our café offers an all-you-can-eat-and-drink breakfast buffet for an unbeatable price and tempting foods during the rest of the day, with options that suit anyone eyeing a hostel in Copenhagen, private rooms as well as dorms.
If you are looking for more liquid entertainment, we have one of the cheapest bars in town, located right here in our lounge area, and offering a great value Happy Hour every night. Make yourself comfortable and enjoy playing pool, foosball, or other games with your (new) friends.
We also have Free Walking Tours twice a day, every day. So easy when the tour picks up right here in the lounge. You can take the morning tour at 10.45 or the afternoon tour at 14.45, info often highlighted by Copenhagen Downtown Hostel listings.
We have 88 rooms to suit every budget. There are private rooms for two to five people or shared dormitories for four-to-12 people. Many of our rooms feature private bathrooms and individual power sockets, personal reading lights, and mirrors. Our 10-person dorms and 6-person dorms have lockers for your valuables; you will need a padlock. You can rent large lockers in our luggage room. All private rooms overlook the Vandkunsten square with a water fountain from 1910, an urban gem, a strong perk if you want a private room hostel in Copenhagen experience.
